Crystal Mind™ is a product with roots and referances to the late David Horrobin´s ideas, know-how and research, regarding essential fatty acids and cognitive health.

Crystal Mind™ is based on modern research related to all congitive functions, and using the latest and state of the art technology for creating a highly effective product based on essential fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6, combined with the cognitive vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin D3, folic acid, zinc and magnesium. All ingredients well documented supporting an active and healthy brain.

The Origin of Crystal Mind™

All ready in the late 60s and early 70s, the world famous scientist David Horrobin saw the relationship between essential fatty acids such as omega-3 and omega-6, and its role in brain health and cognitive functions, and his research started with omega-6 for womens hormonal balance.

He quickly understood the importance of proper and right fatty acids for the right conditions, and the importance of omega-fatty acids. Since the brain consists of huge amounts of fatty acids, and the fact fatty acids are needed to form and control hormones and signal substances, such as seretonin, dopamin etc – he back then theorised that a daily supplement of the right fatty acid would benefit human health and cognitive functions.

One of the first products and formulations he later put out on the market was a product based on Evening Primrose Oil, a product for women, targeting PMS and related mood swings, skin, hair and nails.

The Brains Fatty Acid Paradox

Later on, it was theorised that since the brain consist of mainly omega-3-DHA, a product high in DHA and low in omega-3-EPA would benefit brain health and cognitive.

Also, it was then well understood the importance of a small amount of omega-6-fatty acid for its role regarding cognitive functions. The product using tuna oil was born. Being high in DHA and low in EPA, as well as having LA-fatty acids from Evening Primrose Oil.

This is a product with a ration between EPA and DHA of 1:4, as well as about 10% omega-6-GLA. In the 80s and early 90s – several studies was performed using Efalex to verify its benefit for several conditions, such as reading, writing and learning ability as well as attenion and concentration.

However, the results with omega-3-DHA was rather modest, if at all. This to the researchers great surprice.

By now, it was also possible to separete the omega-3s, using an esterification process (breaking up the omega-3-fatty acid´glyceride back bone), thus one could get a pure DHA or a pure EPA product, eliminating the guesswork of which of the two omega-fatty acids is most important for cognitive functions.

The breakthrough in cognitive research and omega-3-fatty acids

David Horrobin and partners, also had set their interest on using fatty acids for other cognitive challenges as well, and they started a study  giving depressive patients either pure ethyl-DHA, pure ethyl-EPA – or a placebo. Thus, they would be able to prove the efficacy of omega-3-DHA on congitive functions and its importance for optimal brain health.

The trail was of course blinded – the scientist did not know which product given to which patient. When the study was completed – and before the code of blinded product was opened, they did see 1 product showed a huge significant benefit against depression, and 2 products showed no result at all. They where thrilled – they believed they now had proven DHAs role in cognitive function therapy.

However, much to their surprice – when they broke the code for actives and placebo, it turned out that the people who got pure ethyl-DHA and the group given placebo – showed absolutely now improvement at all!

It was the ethyl-EPA group of patients who improved – and their improvement was to the same effect as standard treatment. The researchers was stunned by this result, to say the least. So they began to investigate WHY omega-EPA showed so extraordinary results on cognition, and omega-DHA showed no result at all.

Slowly – scientist understood the following:

Omega-3-EPA play a significant role controlling brain health and optimum cognitive functions by several actions:

  1. EPA is the anti-inflammatory – DHA is not.
  2. EPA is needed for the cells reseptors for seretonin, dopamin etc
  3. EPA is needed for the formation of dopamin, seretonin etc
  4. DHA is needed in the cell membrane

They also found out, that an enzyme called phosoholipase-alpha2 (PLA2), influence the brain cells. PLA2 is actually capable of ”stripping” the cell membranes for DHA, thus DHA is lost, and the brain cell is thus functioning poorly.

PLA2 can become highly overactive due to a genetic disposistion, lack of vitamins, minerals, lack of important enzymes to break down fatty acids properly, poor dietary habits either creating unhealthy environments in our bodies, or blocking for enzymatic actions.

However, as we know today, omega-3-EPA will prevent PLA2 from removing DHA from the cell membrane.

Enter the Second Generation of Fatty Acids for Cognitive Functions

Once this was understood – David Horrobin quickly focused on omega-3-EPA for cognitive functions, and formulated a new product, today known as EYE Q.

Having the completely opposite formulation as EFALEX, the ratio between EPA:DHA is about 2,8:1 – but Horrobin kept his 10% omega-6-GLA, as it do have some essential functions for optimal brain health.

A new area in research started with EYE Q for several different conditions related to cognitive health in both kids, teenageers and older adults.

The published results from these studies shows a very good effect with omega-3-EPA outperforming the effect of standard treatments.

Huge improvements is also seen on children and adolescents with difficulties in the school, and consumer feedback also shows great improvements in everyday life and for people all ages.

Still some researchers continued doing several studies using ethyl-DHA for brain health, and it still show no results what so ever in cognitive benefits, except in children 0 – 2 years of age.  This gives more strength to David Horrobins and his partners research and understanding of the brains fatty acid paradox.

Unfortunately, David Horrobin died  before his work was completed, but his daughter and her husband kept the ideas, patents and intellectual property and kept on fulfilling Horrobins life long dream – to have a highly effective, safe and natural products for cognitive health.

The goal was for the first time to produce a natural omega-fatty acids with higher % of omegas, as well as for the oil to be reduced for mono- and unsaturated fatty acids.

In collaboration with their 9 year long EYE Q partner in Norway, Mr. Terje Myrvold – Crystal Mind was developed.  The first product using this special oil – Crystal Oil™, which you will find in Crystal Mind.

Crystal Mind is, unlike other similar oils –  reduced for monounsaturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Thus you have less interferance from them, less competition for the enzymes – the EPA and DHA can thus more easily do its job, taking care of your brain more correctly.

The EPA:DHA ratio in Crystal Oil used in Crystal Mind is as high as +3,5:1. This is significantly higher compared to standard industrial omega-3-oils, yet still 100% natural.

Since mono- and unsaturated fatty acids are greatly reduced in Crystal Oil, it also have a omega-3 content of over 50%, whereas other oils reach only 40%.

Reducing those fatty acids from an natural oil – also makes it more stable and less prone for oxidation. Oxidation is a huge problem for amost all fish oil.

Crystal Mind is more stable due to its production process.

Crystal Mind is based on the latest know-how regarding fatty acids, vitamins and minerals for cognetiv health, as well as using the latest production technology for omega-fatty acids – providing the marked with a product far superior to any other product intended for cognitive functions.

Crystal Mind will thus, due to the natural state and higher EPA to DHA ratio, being reduced for mono- and unsaturated fatty acids, as well as the added vitamin B6, vitamin B12, folic acid, magnesium and zinc – provide the same or a better result with only 2-4 capsules aday – as compared to 6 to 8 capsules aday for the other competitive products.
